Hungarian Olympic movement has a long tradition dating back to the beginnings of modern Olympism. Hungarians see the Olympic medallist as heroes representing the nation especially in troubled times. Development of Olympism was disrupted by two world wars. After the second world conflict Olympism in Hungary was significantly influenced by the communist regime, where top athletes and their participation in the Olympic Games have served primarily to promotion of the regime. Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB) has become a puppet organization under the auspices of the National Office for Physical Education and Sport, whose competence was in almost everything. State supervision is reflected by the need to cancel the Hungarian participation in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles 1984. All funds came from the state budget. With the fall of the communist regime in 1989, where the top sporting officials, however, did not actively participate, the MOB has become independent again, and manages virtually all Hungarian sporting events.
