History of Canoeing in Ceske Budejovice from its beginnings to the mid-1980s

Due to their strategic location České Budějovice had a very important position in in Czechoslovakian canoeing and in water tourism until the construction of the dam system in the middle of Vltava River. Due to that at the beginning and during the first stage of development Ceske Budejovice became an important target, transit and starting point of the canoeing enthusiasts at the time, especially the ones from Prague. At that time Ceske Budejovice influenced the development of canoeing in the entire Bohemia region. Therefore the beginnings of canoeing in Č. Budějovice were actually a reflection of Prague's canoeing life as well. It was only during the interwar period when the canoeing sport in this town acquired its shape. A unique, 189 km long canoeing race with natural obstacles České Budějovice - Prague had a great importance for the development of local canoeing. This race was run between 1922 and 1959 for a total of 27 years. An important milestone in the local canoeing life was the opening of the artificial slalom race in České Vrbné in 1983. From that time, water slalom gained a distinct predominance over speed canoeing leaving it way behind. This is also the period, which ends this relatively detailed statement.
