Sports journalism in České Budějovice from its beginnings to the first half of the 20th century

It is indisputable that provincial periodicals perform a pivotal role in all spheres of local life because they, unlike national papers, make a seminal contribution to the local people’s identification with their region and its particular segments. The inexemptible task of local papers and magazines is to encourage the population’s getting involved in regional affairs and bolster their integration into diverse activities, including sports pursuits. From this perspective we often cannot make a full appraisal of the informational, political and social function of local media which frequently remain beyond the intellectual curiosity of pundits. Among others, this article is focused on stimulating greater interest in this subject through presenting hitherto unpublished survey of the origins and development of Czech and German sports papers and periodicals published in České Budějovice till the mid- 20th century. The readership of these publications constituted a public to whom preoccupation with regional sports activities became the cement of coherence. The České Budějovice-based sports publications participated in organising particular gatherings (such as mass gymnastic events; Sokol gymnastic festivals; competitions; general assemblies); shared in building new facilities and stadiums, and promoted the cohesion of club membership by recognising sports pursuits as leisure-time relaxation. Last but not least, in troubled times they provided their readers with support and encouragement. Since the development of journalism in Budějovice was affected by the long-time coexistence of Czech and German communities, there were both political and interest periodicals published in Czech or German language, which was also the case of sports oriented newspapers.
