Specific conditioning in team sport athletes is becoming more important in the last decade. Thus, new approach for conditioning in the form of small sided games became popular in team sports. The aim of this study is to compare the physiological demands between 4v4 a 3v3 basketball small-sided games (SSG) played on different field size and identify the difference of physiological response between boys and girls. Twelve boys (age: 12.67 ± 0.49 years) and twelve girls (age: 12.58 ± 0.51 years) participated in this study. Heart rate responses and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were measured to assess the physiological load of four SSG. Difference in load intensity for boys and girls were not shown significant (p = 0.707). The results indicated that SSG played 3v3 produced significantly higher physiological load on players compared to games 4v4 in both field sizes - 10 × 15m (p = 0.000) and 20 × 15m (p = 0.041). Furthermore, higher physiological load was also observed in games (both 4v4, p = 0.001; and 3v3, p = 0.001) played on smaller field. The results also show a very strong correlation (r > 0.8) between the %HRmax and RPE in all the SSG. Coaches should be aware of different physiological demands of SSG and use them according to their training objectives.
