History of cycling and water tourism in České Budějovice (Budweis) from their beginnings to 1938

This paper thematically builds on an already published article devoted to the beginnings of classical hiking in the same period and practically in the same territory. Its content only underlines the wide range of physical activities related to the natural environment, which the inhabitants of České Budějovice gradually began to practice from the end of the 19th century. In this natural center of southern Bohemia, which is extremely rich not only in natural beauty but also in historical monuments and other popular tourist destinations, not only classic hiking was developed but also its forms related to technical means of transport. In the area of České Budějovice were cycling and water tourism operated during the summer months, and in winter, ski tourism. These activities have gradually evolved into self-contained sectors that have not only complemented classical tourism but have gradually surpassed it in importance. This Topic focuses on the period of the beginnings and evolution of cycling and water tourism up to the start of the Second World War, which largely determines their development up to the present day. There is also a significant intermingling of the contemporary realism of the Czech-German national space, which makes it interesting from a supra-regional perspective. In addition, there are a relatively comfortable number of historical sources and sources of information to process it.
